I was just trying to connect my AudioTron to a Vista machine that has my music collection on it. The network connection didn’t work, because the Audiotron is using an old version of the relevant network protocols. This is just a “note to self” type post to remind me what I needed to change in the security policy of the Vista machine to make it work:

  • LAN Manager authentication level set to Send LM and NTLM responses
  • Do not store LAN Manager hash value on next password change set to Disabled …

Just came across this, and I thought I’d document it for myself and others. I was trying to install SnagIt on a newly installed Vista system and every time the installation just stopped right after the first wizard page, giving me a “Fatal Error Message” with the detail information “Installation ended prematurely because of an error.” I had already installed Camtasia before SnagIt, so I thought this was rather weird - seemed like if the installer worked for one of the products, it should work f …

I was trying to run the default website in a default installation of IIS on Vista, and I got this error message:

iis-cant-start-website.png

What the …? Who comes up with crap like this? Unbelievable… even the error code is useless to search for, as apparently there are hundreds of other error conditions in Windows that bring up the same error result. Does Windows have so many error conditions that the value range of a 4 byte uint is no longer l …

After reading lots of stuff about ReadyBoost, hearing Dave’s song and having it recommended to me by a colleague, I decided to try it out on my system. Why hadn’t I done so before? Well… laziness ;-) And, seriously, I didn’t think I’d really like it too much. I’m using my main system (which is an Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi) on the road a lot, meaning elsewhere but standing on my desk. The most propagated option for ReadyBoost is to use a USB flash drive. Unlike (apparently) many people, I don’t …

I got myself a BlackBerry, which I’ve never had before. It came with a software CD, but although the model I got is rather new (BlackBerry 8800), the software was an older version and I was immediately suspicious of its compatibility with Vista. The first thing I noticed when I tried to install it nevertheless is that the installer is unbelievably slow — meaning it has long periods of doing nothing at all. Between the splash screen that comes up in the …

I talked about this to Ian the other day: is the Vista Sidebar system really good or not? Of course there’s no simple answer to this, but I had some thoughts and they’re not all positive. First, let me say that I really like the whole gadget idea. Somehow I was always a fan of that kind of thing — Linux was always strong in this regard, and I used to do a lot of work on Linux. The original announcement about the Vista Sidebar had me rather enthusiastic about it, and the great looks it promised …

I have previously written about this, and today I’ve had occasion to set up another server. I found out some details doing that, so I thought I’d post an update (as much for my own benefit in case I need to do it again, as for anybody else’s). So, last time I had been wondering about the problems I saw with the SVNService — basically it didn’t seem to be included in the package. After I had finished the whole process, I had had the idea that maybe the problem was a result of the fact that I sk …

Update: Just to make sure everybody sees this - this issue has been solved, the info can be found in Robin’s comment below. Thanks, Robin! (Edit: These comments are lost due to changes of blog systems over the years.) I’m trying to go through this URL to activate the copy of Microsoft Reader installed on my laptop. I don’t see any problems until I get to the point where the activation process is actually running with the small progress bar… but every time I get this error message before …
